Osmania General Hospital to now carry out hair transplants

Most of the patients approaching the hospital are above 45 years of age.

Hyderabad: An increasing number of women are coming to Osmania General Hospital for free hair transplant and over 100 requests are now pending before the hospital. The first successful hair transplant was carried out on a 27-year-old man and doctors are contemplating carrying out the second one on a woman. But the Department of Dermatology is not in a position to take up these cases regularly as they have a lot of patients coming with other skin problems.

A senior doctor at the department explained, “We have zeroed in on a patient who is a woman and she approached us with severe hair fall issues and extremely less re-growth. The evaluations and investigations are presently going on. We have decided to take up only one case in two months as there are a lot of other patients who seek regular treatment for skin issues.” While the list is slowly rising, the waiting lines for patients too is going to be really long. Most who have approached the hospital are above 45 years of age and are suffering from extreme baldness.

Dr G. Venakata Ramana, Professor and Head of the Department, said, “We attend to 150 patients every day and they come with various issues of venereology, leprosy and other skin issues. Due to these reasons there is very little time and a lot of planning has to be carried out before opting for transplantation.” Interestingly, the department is now also tabulating data of skin infections and have now revealed that that 763 cases of vitiligo were recorded from June 2015 to June 2016, of which 146 people had to undergo surgeries. These records, claims the department, is one way to tabulate and later research existing skin problems in the people of the state.
