India to invite Chinese scientists for yoga day celebrations in Antarctica

Hyderabad: Come June 21 and the frozen land of Antarctica could well see a bit of thawing of the ice between India and China, with the Centre planning to invite Chinese scientists on the southernmost continent to join the International Yoga Day (IYD) celebrations.

“We will be inviting scientists from China on Antarctica to join their Indian counterparts at Bharti, the third Indian research base on the continent,” Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal said here on Friday.

This outreach is part of this year’s IYD plans that will see yoga demonstrations in Antarctica and the Arctic region’s Indian base Himadri in Svalbard, Norway.

China had since the launch of the IYD in 2015, participated in the event several times with yoga enthusiasts from that country joining in.
