HMWSS&B proposes 22 new STPs

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSS&B) has proposed construction of 22 sewerage treatment plants (STP) in the catchment area covered by the erstwhile GO 111. Four STPs will be taken up on high priority at an estimated cost of ₹82.23 crore.

The MA&UD department has accorded administrative sanction for the expense and also released GO No. 44 dated April 20.

Officials said that while scrapping GO 111, the state government had instructed the water board to ensure that water quality would not be impacted and suggested installation of decentralised STPs, construction of diversion channels for carrying the treated water without letting it into twin reservoirs,

Accordingly, the board prepared proposals to construct nine STPs in the Osmansagar catchment area and 13 in the Himayatsagar catchment area. HMWS&SB managing director M. Dana Kishore in his orders stated that the board has engaged the services of NCPE Infrastructure India (P) Ltd to prepare a comprehensive plan for complete abatement of sewage pollution to the twin reservoirs and projected population for next 30 years.

He said the objective was to ensure that the treated water is taken downstream without polluting the two reservoirs. He said that as an immediate measure to prevent the contamination, the water board has proposed to take up four STPs.

Authorities said that the Osmansagar catchment area STPs would treat 337.73 million litres a day (MLD) of sewage and at Himayatsagar 607.78 MLD
