Chennai: Mixer lorry kills cattle, residents go on rampage

Chennai: Five buffaloes were killed in a road accident after a concrete mixer lorry rammed into them near Selaiyur, Tambaram, on Friday night. Police said the lorry belonged to a private mineral industry. Angered residents damaged the lorry and staged protests demanding action against the lorry driver.

Godhandaraman, a resident of Thiruvanchery near Tambaram, had five buffalos and he was running a dairy business. Police said on Friday at around 7.30 pm, when cattle were crossing the main road near Agaramthen, a concrete mixer lorry heading towards Mambedu, knocked them down. The truck was taking a sharp turn towards the Selaiyur main road when it ran over them and killing all the buffaloes on the spot “ said an investigation officer.

Angered residents pelted stones at the lorry that killed the buffaloes and thrashed the driver. More than hundred passersby and residents staged a road roko demanding action against the driver. The Selaiyur police and the Chromepet traffic investigation police rushed to the spot on being informed about the protest.

The lorry driver from Tambaram was held and handed over to the Selaiyur police. A case has been registered against the driver for negligence driving. Meanwhile, the protest disrupted the traffic on Selaiyur road for more than two hours. After the police promised to provide solatium to the owner of the buffaloes, the protest was called off. Further investigations are on.
