Vijaywada: YSRC president and Chief Minister-elect Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has reportedly indicated to newly-elected party MPs to be ready to resign to press the party’s demand for special status for Andhra Pradesh.
The new MPs who came to the YSRC Parliamentary Party meeting were shocked when Mr Reddy hinted at resignation in the first meeting.
The YSRC has 22 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Five YSRC MPs had resigned in the previous Lok Sabha for special status.
Mr Reddy was elected leader of the YSRC Legislature Party at a meeting held at his residence. The YSRC MPs’ meeting happened later during which Mr Reddy asked the MPs to fight for special category status in Parliament.
He said the YSRC will not give up its fight. It would first try to persuade the Centre. If the efforts fail, the party would resort to all types of strategies including resignation of MPs to pressurise the Centre.
While the reference to their resignation appears to have shocked them, the MPs vowed to work to get special status.
The Parliamentary Party meeting ended without electing a leader, and the MPs asked Mr Reddy to select one among them.
Newly elected MPs thanked Mr Reddy for giving them a chance. Bapatla MP-elect Nandigam Suresh said that he was an activist but Mr Reddy had reposed faith in him.
The YSRCLP meeting was held in Jagan’s house.
