Thiruvananthapuram: BJP State president Kummanam Rajasekharan has been appointed the Governor of Mizoram, leaving the post of the state boss in a vacuum. Whether he was kicked upstairs on the eve of the Chengannur bye-election is a speculation. The 66-year-old Rajasekharan was at a by-poll rally at Puliyoor in Chengannur when the news broke. He told Deccan Chronicle that he was literally taken aback by the national leadership's decision.

"I had never demanded or aspired to get a post at the Centre. I do not know what to say. Let the official declaration reach me. I will react in detail on Saturday", he said. He was installed the State president in December 2015. BJP State leadership was also caught off guard when the Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué was released at 8:35 pm on Friday.

There were earlier reports that the State leadership will witness a major reshuffle after the Chengannur bye-election on May 28 Mr Rajasekharan was a government servant. He quit the job to join the RSS and serve as a fulltime party worker. He was Kottayam district secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad. In 1985, he became a leader of Hindu front, contesting in the Thiruvananthapuram East Assembly seat. He went on to become the general convener of Hindu Aikya Vedhi in1992. In 1996, he became the organizing secretary of VHP. Last Assembly election in 2016 he contested in vain in Vattiyoorkavu in Thiruvananthapuram.
