Violence at Tindivanam breaks out after Ambedkar statue desecration

As tensions grew, more VCK cadres thronged the area and squatted on the roads.

Chennai: Violence erupted at Tindivanam this morning after miscreants desecrated the Ambedkar statue at Siruvadi with chappal garland. VCK cadres who noticed what was done to the the statue assembled at the arterial junction and staged a road roko demanding immediate arrest of those behind the incident.

As tensions grew, more VCK cadres thronged the area and squatted on the roads. There were incidents of stone pelting and the agitators broke windows of a few government buses. Senior police and revenue officials led by Tindivanam deputy superintendent Thirumal arrived and pacified the agitators. Miscreants also hurled stones at shops and the traders downed shutters till evening in Tindivanam. Traffic along the arterial GST highway to Tiruchy was also affected with vehicles piling up for a few kilometers on Wednesday.

The demonstrators demanded security and surveillance for the statute and also insisted on CCTV cameras be set up in areas where Ambedkar statues have been installed in the district. After the revenue officials assured necessary action the agitators withdrew their protest. Police had registered a case and are investigation the issue. Police vigil had also been stepped up in the locality to prevent any untoward incidents.
