Tamil Nadu: 4,000 candidates appointed as school lab assistants

Over seven lakh candidates who appeared for lab assistant written test had to wait for nearly two years to know their results.

CHENNAI: Over seven lakh candidates who appeared for lab assistant written test had to wait for nearly two years to know their results. But once the results were declared on March 23, more than 4,000 lab assistants to government schools have been appointed in a record time of three weeks. The Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE) conducted the written test for recruiting 4,362 lab assistants to the government schools on May 30, 2015. The officials kept the results in abeyance after the Madras high court’s order directing the government to conduct the recruitment based on written exam.

After a long gap of 22 months, the results were declared on March 23. Following that officials from school education department worked at breakneck speed to make these appointments at the earliest. In each district, as per the existing vacancies, the candidates were called for certificate verification in 1:5 ratio. The certificate verification was held on April 9, 10 and 11.

“Totally 27,000 candidates were called for the certificate verification. Along with the marks scored in the written test additional marks were awarded to employment seniority, higher education qualification and experience. After verifying the certificates, the selection lists were released district wise,” officials said. The department conducted the counselling for giving appointment orders to the lab assistants on April 17 and 18.

Apart from Tiruvannamalai district, where the court stayed the recruitment process, the candidates from all the districts got their appointment orders. “We followed the court’s direction in appointing lab assistants. The appointments were made in a transparent and fair manner,” said T.Udhayachandran, secretary, school education. The appointment of lab assistants will help the students from government schools to conduct lab experiments better and help them prepare better for practical examination.
