Winds help moderate temperature in Chennai

On the other hand, Chennai temperature did not go above 38 degree C due to the much-needed sea breeze that took off on Monday.

Chennai: Despite heavy rainfall accompanied by a hailstorm on Sunday, temperatures in Salem touched 41.1degree C followed by Karur, which recorded 41.2degree C.

On the other hand, Chennai temperature did not go above 38 degree C due to the much-needed sea breeze that took off on Monday.

According to the director of Regional Meteorological Centre, S. Balachandran, the maximum temperature at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam on Monday was 36.6 degree C and 38.6 degree C. “Winds from south and southeast direction moderated the city’s temperature from 40 degree C to 38 degree C,” he added.

Zero moisture westerly winds traveling towards the interior districts of Tamil Nadu are driving temperatures in Salem, Krishnagiri, Vellore and Tiruppathur districts upwards, Balachandran said.

Weather bloggers termed the Salem’s phenomenon normal, attributing it to the oscillation of westerly and northwesterly winds. “Vazhaipadi in Salem recorded 20mm of rainfall. Hailstorms in the hilly areas like Salem are general during sizzling temperatures,” said weather blogger S. Bhaskaran.
