No power cuts despite soaring consumption in Telangana

Telangana State has over 8,000-odd MW power supply at its disposal from various sources.

Hyderabad: State power officials are confident of meeting rising power demand in the summer without resorting to power cuts.

“This will be the second year in a row when there would be no power cuts even during the summer. People don’t have to endure power cuts,” a senior official of Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited said.

With temperatures in March itself, power consumption in the state has gone up to 150 million units per day. It is expected to hover between 160 and 180 million units in April and May. The power demand from Greater Hyderabad is expected to touch an all-time high of 57 million units per day in April and May compared to 49.5 million units now.

Experts feel that the state may not have any problem to supply the required electricity as it has already entered into power purchase agreements for more than the required power in the state.

The officials are also ready to fully meet the power demand from agriculture. However, M. Venu Gopal of Power for Development, claims power demand from farms could be lesser than last year.

Kids’ NGO seeks early vacations

The AP Balala Hakkula Sangham, an NGO, on Friday appealed to the TS government to declare summer vacation for schools due to the high temperatures.

Sangham president Anuradha Rao said that weather forecasts indicated that the temperatures would further increase and there was the possibility of a heat wave in the state.

“If the temperatures continue in this manner, leading to a heat wave, there is every possibility of children suffering sunstroke.”
