Hyderabad: The Alliance Against CAA, NPR & NRC has chalked out a fortnight-long, state-wide campaign from March 1 to educate people about the implications of the National Population Register.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, alliance convener, former High Court judge Justice Chandra Kumar, said the questions embedded in the NPR process seek to gather objectionable information from citizens.
“The government is trying to collect data from citizens in the name of the census or the NPR. Millions of Indians will be in danger of being arrested for failing to provide proof of citizenship through the government’s implementation of the NRC, the NPR and the CAA,” he said.
The leaders of the alliance said that the TRS government should ensure that the NPR exercise in its present form is halted.
City convener Sara Mathew said that the alliance will hold mohalla/basti sabhas and distribute material on the possible impact of the NPR, the NRC and the CAA and persuade people not to provide information to the NPR enumerators. The Women’s Day on March 8 will be observed as an anti-NPR day as women will be more affected by this exercise.
The alliance condemned the Centre’s “inaction” in maintaining peace and the “nationwide assault on the democratic right to protest,” and the denial of permissions for holding meetings and discussions. They condemned the violence in the national capital.
They urged the police to stop detaining peaceful agitators who have adopted the path of non-violence shown by Gandhiji. Our struggle is not against any individual; we are striving to safeguard the Constitution, they said.
