BASE students ask ministers to redress grievances

As per UGC norms, the current COE is not qualified, they claimed.

Bengaluru: Ten students of Dr B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics (BASE), on Monday, met Higher Education Minister G.T. Devegowda and Social Welfare Minister Priyank Kharge at Vidhana Soudha to air their grievances.

The higher education minister is the chairman of the BASE governing council and the social welfare minister is the vice-chairman of the BASE governing council.

The students were firm on their demand that the CEO and Controller of Examinations (COE) of the institute have to be removed for the institute to achieve its objectives.

As per UGC norms, the current COE is not qualified, they claimed. Being an affiliated institute and not an autonomous university, the post of COE is not required in the first place. For affiliated institutions a faculty member is given the additional charge of COE.

And if at all a COE is to be appointed, the criterion is that he must have at least 15 years of teaching experience as an assistant professor or eight years of teaching experience and three years of administrative experience, the students claimed.

Kharge assured that he would meet the students on March 2 and solve their problems. The ministers asked the students to continue their academic activity.
