Telangana: In first, state shakes down defaulters

State to auction properties, recover dues; commercial tax defaults mount to Rs 1,194 crore.

Hyderabad: The state government has invoked the Revenue Recovery Act for the first time to recover commercial tax arrears from defaulting firms. The properties of over 300 firms in 11 divisions across the state have been attached; they together owed nearly Rs 320 crore.

The government has directed officials to auction the properties to recover arrears which have mounted to Rs 1,194 crore. The divisions comprising the city and its outskirt constituted nearly 70 per cent of the arrears.

The arrears have been accumulating since the 1990s. Most of the defaulting firms have closed down over the years. With this, the government has decided to attach their properties and auction them to recover arrears.

Punjagutta: Rs 57 crore arrears
Saroornagar: Rs 49 crore
Nalgonda: Rs 42 crore
Abids: Rs 40 crore
Hyderabad Rural: Rs 37 crore
Nizamabad: Rs 24 crore
Secunderabad: Rs 23 crore

Charminar: Rs 15 crore
