Automatic call device for 108 ambulance service
Chennai: A post-graduate engineering student and his professors have developed an advanced automatic calling device for 108 emergency helpline in case of any accident.
“After the accident, the device will send the location coordinates in a voice call to the 108 helpline. With the help of cloud telephony technology, the text will be converted to the voice call. It will take exactly two minutes after the accident,” said J.Vivek, a first-year student in M.E. Computer Science of Sathyabama University.
In case of any accident or emergency, if the call is made to 108, free ambulance service will be made available within 10 minutes. “But if the accident occurs in a remote area or during midnight it is very difficult to identify the location. If the accident is very critical the victim has to wait till someone informs to the emergency helpline 108,” he said.
“To solve the issue we developed the device which will automatically send the exact location of the accident to 108 without any human intervention. This device can be fixed to any light and heavy vehicle,” he added.
A team of four persons has developed the device. Apart from Vivek, Professor M. Lakshmi, Head, faculty of computing, R. Sethuraman, Assistant Professor, department of computer science engineering, D.Manuel, Technical Assistant, department of electrical engineering also part of the team.
“The device is inbuilt with a two-way communication system. It provides a call back system in which a call can be made by 108 to the device and when the call is received by the device, it automatically switches on the mike and speakers of the car,” Lakshmi said.
So, the emergency helpline can ascertain the extent of damage before coming to the site. If it is a minor impact there is also an option to deactivate the call in the device, she added.
If any other vehicles met with accident one can send the distress call using the device, she said.
US consul general Philip A.Min launched this emergency calling device for 108 on Thursday at Sathyabama University in Sholinganallur here.
