Madras high court not to initiate contempt proceedings against striking teachers

Chennai: The Madras high court has declined to entertain a plea from an advocate to initiate contempt proceedings against the government teachers in the state, who are resorting to strike from January 22 along with other government employees under the Joint Action Committee of Teachers Organization-Government Employees Organization (JACTO-GEO).

When Naveen Kumar Murthi sought permission to move an urgent motion, a division bench comprising Justices M.Sathyanarayanan and P.Rajamanickam said this court had only directed the government teachers to return to work by January 25 in the interest of Children. It is for the government to monitor and take appropriate action against them

The bench had on January 23 while hearing a petition from a XI student Gokul, which sought to restrain JACTO-GEO from resorting to strike, passed an interim order directing the government teachers to return to work not later than January 25.
