Vijayawada Police Commissioner lauds women for Mahila Mitra's success
Vijayawada: Discrimination towards women should be eradicated through concerted efforts, said Commissioner of Police Gowtham Sawang.
He was speaking at the first anniversary of Mahila Mitra, a new initiative by the police wherein they work in coordination with Vasavi Mahila Mandali to control violence and atrocities against women, held here on Thursday.
After completion of the four-day workshop of CLAP (Community Led Action Programme), the anniversary of Mahila Mitra was held.
The participants of CLAP shared their experiences.
Siva Kumari, a head constable at Mahila police station, said: "Women have to shed fear and stop thinking that they cannot go out to any place in the night or to places like tea stalls, even in the morning. Earlier, I also had such feelings that women can move only in restricted places but now, I can say women can move freely in the city and they will not face any problems as we are working round-the-clock."
ACP Sravani said that nearly 2,207 eve-teasers were caught by the police and that the Mahila Mandali members counselled them. The Mahila Mitra aims at eradicating discrimination of women in the society, she said.
Ex-MP Chennupati Vidya appreciated the cooperation of the commissioner of police Gowtham Sawang in bringing about a change in the way women are treated in the society. She said: "This concept has to spread in the entire state."
Commissioner of Police Mr.Gowtham Sawang said that the concept was suggested by the government itself. "I appreciate all the Mahila Mitra members for their active involvement in the programme. We should take this to the next level drawing inspiration from the success achieved in the first year."
Addl. commissioner of police B.V. Ramana Kumar, joint commissioner Rana, ACP V.V. Naidu, doctor Keerti Vaidya and others were present.
