Kerala: Higher education survey on anvil
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Higher Education Council will undertake a state-level higher education survey on the model of the all-India survey on higher education. The details of higher education institutions in the state will be collected using various parameters. The survey would try to identify the difficulties faced by researchers and availability of approved research guides after the implementation of the UGC’s minimum standards and procedure for award of PhD degree.
The KSHEC governing body has also suggested the introduction of a standardised academic and examination calendar for all the universities in the state. Another recommendation of the governing body was to study the possibility of implementing a split vacation system. The council has also decided to constitute a committee of pro-vice-chancellors to submit recommendations to implement the proposal.
The plan is to replace the present two-month annual vacation pattern from April to May. This will be split into two with a vacation each in November and May. The KSHEC felt that the split will help fulfil the mandatory number of 90 teaching days in a semester. It will also facilitate the smooth conduct of examinations. It also was of the view that split holiday will eliminate non-attendance of teachers in exam duties.
