Kerala: Politicians bat for Kannur peace
KANNUR: In politically volatile Kannur, a club is teaming up rival politicians under one banner to play cricket. The CPM, BJP, Congress leaders will together play cricket against officials including the District Collector, Police superintendent and also with teams of journalists and businessmen from the district.
Kannur Sporting Club’s annual cricket tournament, scheduled to be held on February 25 at Collectorate Maidan, is being held with the message ‘Cricket for Peace’.
The team of politicians ,captained by Ports Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran will also have Muslim League leader K.M. Shaji MLA (vice-captain), district panchayat president K.V. Sumesh, DCC president Satheesan Pacheni, Yuva Morcha State vice-president Biju Ilakkuzhi, DYFI joint-secretary Biju Kandakkai, KSU district secretary V.P. Abdul Rasheed and Yuva Morcha district president K.P. Arun along with others.
The officials’ team will have district collector Mir Mohammed Ali, police superintendent K.P Philip, former Kannur Range IG Dinendra Kashyap, former district collector P Bala Kiran, former SP Harishankar among others. Peace organisations like Shanthi Sena, People’s Forum for Peace among others are also co-operating in the tourney.
“We are trying to propagate the idea of harmony and peace among people through this noble effort where all political leaders, officials and other stakeholders are joining hands together for a better Kannur,” said Kannur Sporting Club president P. Shahin.
