Hyderabad: Newly-laid road being dug up

The move has not gone down well, and residents are fuming at the unplanned work and wastage of public funds.

Hyderabad: The newly-laid concrete road in Sun City, Bandlaguda, was dug up on Monday to lay pipelines. The move has not gone down well, and residents are fuming at the unplanned work and wastage of public funds. The gram panchayat admitted that it knew in advance that the pipeline would be laid there.

Uploading the picture of an earthmover tearing up the road on Twitter, city resident Subhas Yadav said, “Recently, constructed concrete road in Suncity being torn down. It has become difficult to stay inside the house. What is the use of making such strong roads if it has to be destroyed like this?(sic)”

While other Twitter users alleged graft, one of them plaintively said “It happens everywhere in Hyderabad.”

The area comes under the jurisdiction of the gram panchayat. Asked why they were breaking up a new, and expensive, road, an official said the area was sanctioned an extended water connection facility from the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Board for which the road needed to be broken up.

Asked whether they had not received an intimation regarding the pipeline, he said though there was information of the sanction officials did not anticipate that such a large amount of digging would be required.

The gram panchayat would stabilise the road after the work is done, he said.
