Kerala: Timeframe for medical admissions

This will help students to have a clear-cut idea as to the fee they should pay for each institution.

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has come out with a definite plan for MBBS admissions by deciding on the schedule for fixing of fee and submission of details to the fee regulation committee to avoid legal hassles. This was as per the judgment of the High Court dated November 2, which has asked the state government to fix admission schedule to safeguard the interest of students so that the whole procedure can be streamlined.

This would also mean that the students would have a clear-cut idea as to the fee they should pay for each institution. However, this decision would become applicable only from the 2018-19 academic year, as this year’s process has already begun. The order issued by the health and family welfare principal secretary B. Srinivas asks colleges to submit the proposed fee along with the supporting documents before November 15 of each year. It wants the Fee Regulatory Committee to conduct a preliminary scrutiny of materials they submit before December 15.

The committee can ask for additional information from the colleges before December 31 of each year. It will have to give an opportunity to them for hearing before passing the final orders on the fee before February 15. If the institution has any grievances, it should be brought before the High Court within 30 days. If the court could not give any final order before April 15, an interim order can be made to safeguard the interest of students as well as institutions. As per the MCI schedule, the entrance exams are to be held between May 1 and 7 and results published on June 1 with minor variations.

On June 10, the state government should issue the notification containing the fee structure, the seat matrix and other details. The rest can be as per the detailed schedule published by the MCI. The state will conduct two round of common counselling followed by the last round of spot admissions to fill up the remaining seats. The commissioner for entrance examinations will forward the list of admitted students to the admission supervisory and fee regulatory committee within 48 hours of the last date of closure of admissions.
