Telangana: Utter chaos as liver is forced to cross road

A green corridor was provided from Banjara Hills to Gachibowli on Saturday afternoon to transport the liver.

HYDERABAD: The liver of a 43-year-old man was donated to a 59-year-old from Delhi who is undergoing treatment in the city. The liver was donated by P. Srinivas, who had been declared brain dead. A green corridor was provided from Banjara Hills to Gachibowli on Saturday afternoon to transport the liver. But there was confusion over whether the liver was being transported to Continental Hospital or to Delhi.

A senior official of the Jeevandan department said, “There is no Jeevandan scheme in Delhi. Hence it was explained to officials at Care Hospital that the organ was to be transplanted to a patient who is from Delhi.” There was another problem. “The ambulance could not enter Care Hospital due to the traffic. The team of doctors had to take the donated liver, cross the road and wait on the other side so save time.”

The liver was donated by the family of P. Srinivas from Uppal who was admitted to Care Hospital with fits on December 22. There was no improvement in his condition and he was declared brain dead on December 24. Five of his organs, his liver, kidneys and eyes, were retrieved for the Jeevandan scheme.
