Cops get one day to probe rape' by IPS probationer

Police instituted Mrugender's parents as accused for abetting the crime. All three accused filed separate petitions against possible arrest

HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court has sought the opinion of Kukatpally police in an anticipatory bail plea filed by IPS trainee officer Mrugender Lal Banoth, who is facing rape charges.

Kukatpally police registered a case against Mrugender Lal, son of former TRS legislator Madan Lal, in September for offences under Sections 376(2)(N), 420, 506, 406 of IPC for cheating, raping a woman after promising to marry her, destroying evidences, outraging the modesty of a woman among several other offences.

Police instituted Mrugender’s parents as accused for abetting the crime. All three accused filed separate petitions against possible arrest. On November 5, Justice
Sri Devi granted relief to them by directing the police not to take coercive steps against them.

Meanwhile, the rape victim sought the court to make her a respondent.

However, the accused named only the SHO,Kukatpally police as the respondent. The victim urged the court to hear her contention in the anticipatory bail petition filed by the accused.

On Wednesday, counsel for the victim, Raja Gopal submitted that the police had not initiated any inquiry into the issue nor did they interrogate anyone.

He submitted that the police officers who were approached by the victim had advised her to settle for a compromise.

Meanwhile, counsel for the accused, Radha Rani pointed out that the defacto complainant hadlodged a complaint against the accused only after a FIR was registered against her on September 4 on charges of sending abusive messages on social media against persons known to the accused.

The single judge Justice Kanneganti Lalitha expressed displeasure against police for the delay in submitting their stand and gave them a day’s final chance to submit the status of investigation in the two cases.
