Kochi: Online taxi drivers to stage protest

Earlier, the associations had called a 24-hour token strike demanding the same.

Kochi: The online taxi associations in the district stated that they will stage a sit-in protest outside the Ernakulam district collectorate on Tuesday demanding government intervention on the issues faced by online taxi drivers.

The Kerala Online Drivers’ Union (KODU) president Jackson Varghese will undertake indefinite fast demanding several needs including government control over transportation network companies UBER and OLA, removal of Pool Share facility, reducing commission rates for each trip and increase in wages as directed by the government.

“I will continue the fast until government considers our demands and take necessary actions,” said Jacks-on Varghese.

Earlier, the associations had called a 24-hour token strike demanding the same.

“The companies have agreed to only one demand, that is, to discontinue offroading drivers without warning. But the issues including increase in commission rates were not even considered,” Jackson said. “We need the government to intervene in the issue immediately,” he stressed.

The Online Drivers Union (ODU), Online Taxi Drivers Union (OTDU), Kerala Online Drivers Union (KODU), Self Employees Drivers Union (SEDU), National Secular Conference (NSC), Janapaksham Motor Thozhilali Union (JMTU), and Online Cab Drivers Association (OCDA) will participate in the dharna.
