Centre defends Rakesh Asthana's appointment, verdict reserved

He said Asthana was an outstanding officer who had probed over 40 scams, coal allocation scam, across the country.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday reserved its order on a PIL challenging the appointment of Rakesh Asthana as CBI special director as being illegal, arbitrary, mala fide and in violation of the principle of impeccable integrity and institutional integrity.

A bench of Justices R.K. Agrawal and A.M. Sapre said it would pass orders on November 28 on the petition filed by an NGO even as the Attorney General K.K. Venugopal strongly defended his appointment.

He said Asthana was an outstanding officer who had probed over 40 scams, coal allocation scam, across the country. The AG also dragged industrialist Vijay Mallya who got an affidavit filed through an official against Asthana’s appointment.
