Rs 1.1 cr disbursed to deceased' kin, injured in UP train mishap: Railways

According to prima facie investigation, 14 coaches of the train got derailed near Kanpur due to suspected rail fracture.

Kanpur: The railways has disbursed Rs 1.1 crore as interim relief to the next of kin of the victims of the Indore-Patna Express derailment, an official said on Friday.

The disbursement of the compensation amount to the family members of the deceased had begun a day after the accident following identification of the bodies, Manoj Singh, PRO of Jhansi Division of North Central Railway, said.

Till today, family members of 145 deceased persons have been given Rs 50,000 each as interim relief. Of the 151 people killed in the November 20 mishap, six bodies are yet to be identified, he said.

Similarly, family members of 41 seriously injured people have been handed over Rs 50,000 each at the hospital here while the kin of the 36 others who sustained minor injuries were given Rs 25,000 each, Singh said.

The interim relief to all the victims was given in cash. The rest of the compensation amount will be given by the railways to the affected families at their homes after completion of necessary formalities, he said.

The derailment, which was the worst rail accident in the last 17 years, left around 200 people injured. According to prima facie investigation, 14 coaches of the train got derailed near Kanpur due to suspected rail fracture.
