SIT to record statement of woman in solar scam

The SIT headed by Malabar Special Police commandant U. Abdul Karim held a meeting here on Wednesday to discuss further course of action.

Thiruvananthapuram: The special investigation team constituted to probe the sexual allegation against Congress leaders Oommen Chandy and K. C. Venugopal has decided to record the statement of the complainant woman before a magistrate.

The SIT headed by Malabar Special Police commandant U. Abdul Karim held a meeting here on Wednesday to discuss further course of action.

Steps like recording the statement of Mr Chandy and Mr Venugopal, their arrests and medical tests, would be taken only after gathering evidence.

Sources said the SIT would be soon filing a petition at a local court in Thiruvananthapuram or Kochi for recording the statement of the complainant under section 164 of CrPC.

Though the Crime Branch initially registered the case in Thiruvananthapuram, it was later transferred to the special court in Kochi for considering cases against MLAs and MPs.

Police sources said that since the complaint pertained to the sexual acts that took place about six years back, there was no scope for scientific evidence.

Moreover, the complainant stands accused in several criminal cases. These would be crucial factors for the investigators.

The woman had alleged that Mr Chandy sexually abused her at Cliff House, the official residence of the chief minister, on a hartal day in 2012 and Mr Venugopal raped her at the ministerial bungalow of then tourism minister Anil Kumar.
