Chennai: CCTV cameras for Vandalur zoo

To a question, Sudha said that they preferred to install many cameras near dangerous animals like white tigers.

Chennai: In what could be a first, Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP) in Vandalur has come under the surveillance of CCTV cameras to protect animals and prevent any untoward incidents on the premises, said Deputy Director of AAZP, Sudha Ramen here on Wednesday.

Replying to a volley of questions, the DD pointed out that the zoo authority has fixed 131 CCTVs, of which 98 cameras were installed near animals to monitor them closely. Similarly, 33 cameras have been installed on premise to monitor the visitors. “Needless to say, AAZP will be the one, which has high number of cameras. Further, two lactating rooms have been set up, as many mother with their babies keep visiting the park,” she said.

To a question, Sudha said that they preferred to install many cameras near dangerous animals like white tigers. “We will also monitor whether foods are properly given to such animals and they remain healthy. Further, such move will pave the way for tracing missing animals. Even visitors would strictly be monitored,” the DD noted.

As northeast monsoon is round the corner, the zoo authority has a large number of sand bags, if there is any flood inside the zoo, Sudha said. “Moreover, emergency team, a team of veterinary doctors, generators and battery lights are kept ready to face the monsoon,” she said. Earlier, the zoo officials took journalists to various places on the premises.
