Chennai: A.G. Perarivalan, serving life term for his role in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was back at the Central jail here after spending 60 days with his father who has been unwell for quite a long time.

Perarivalan, a native of Jolarpet in Vellore district, presented himself before the jail authorities on Tuesday evening after his parole ended. He was released from the Vellore prison on August 24 for the first time after he was arrested in 1991 on parole for 30 days, which was extended by another 30 days.

“Perarivalan came back to the prison and reported to authorities after the end of his parole period. He looked cheerful,” an official said.Tuesday's development came after Tamil Nadu Government rejected Perarivalan's request for further extension of his parole.

He was granted parole to meet his ailing 74-year-old father Gnanasekaran, who is suffering from several ailments. The Supreme Court commuted his death sentence to life term in 2014.

Perarivalan has spent over 26 years in prison and for the past few months, his mother Arputhammal had been running from pillar to post seeking parole for him to meet his father.

Arputhammal has fought several legal battles seeking pardon for Perarivalan, who was among those sentenced to death. She had also impressed upon the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to pass a resolution in the State assembly that wanted him and others like Murugan to be saved from gallows.
