Kerala HC directs govt to let transgender write PSC exams under female category

Thiruvanathapuram: Kerala High Court on Wednesday issued a directive to let transgender write Kerala Public Service Commission examinations considering them under female category.

Earlier, sources said that the Public Service Commission (PSC) is set to introduce a column for transgender in its application forms.

The PSC had in principle decided to revise the forms with three columns for gender and had been awaiting the government’s decision on reservation for transgenders.

In a landmark decision accepting transgender persons’ rights by Supreme Court in 2014, popularly referred to as the (National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) judgment, the centre and state governments were directed to extend reservation for socially and educationally backward classes to transgender.

The historically marginalised transgender community had been officially recognised by Kerala as the third gender in 2015.
