President's salary to be hiked from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh per month
New Delhi: The government is set to increase the salaries of the President, Vice President and Governors, after realising that that a cabinet secretary now gets paid more than the President of India.
According to a report in NDTV, Pranab Mukherjee will thus get a whooping hike of over 200 per cent. His salary will increase to Rs 5 lakh from the present Rs 1.5 lakh per month.
The Vice-President's salary will increase to Rs. 3.5 lakh a month from the existing Rs. 1.10 lakh a month.
The President will also get a pension of Rs 1.5 lakh per month after he retires from office, says the report. The spouses of Presidents will get a secretarial assistance of 30,000 per month.
The changes have been made after it was noticed that the salaries of top bureaucrats are now higher than that of the President.
After the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission recommendations, the cabinet secretary gets a monthly salary of Rs 2.5 lakh, a secretary to the government gets Rs 2.25 lakh and an additional secretary more than Rs 1.82 lakh. A joint secretary level officer gets a basic salary ranging between Rs 1.18 lakh and Rs 2.14 lakh per month. Thus, the President’s present salary falls below that of 14 officials of the government.
The new salaries including that of the President and Vice President will come into force from January 1 next year.
