New projects in Telangana to ease traffic congestion
Hyderabad: With several infrastructure projects to ease traffic congestion still on paper, the state government has drawn up plans to construct a 6.5-km elevated expressway from Uppal to Narapally junction. It has also revived a pending flyover project at Che Number Chowrasta at Amberpet.
Projects such as elevated corridor from Patny to Shamirpet and Paradise to Bowenpally, the Regional Ring Road and the flyover at Balanagar T-junction have not taken off due to land acquisition issues.
Former scientist at Central Road Research Institute T.S. Reddy said it was not easy to construct such projects. “They not only need huge land acquisition but also money. Plans that are drawn up should be pursued seriously. The contract to execute the projects should be given only after the government acquires land,” he said.
The projects drawn up by the government require a total of 120 acres of land and at least Rs 15,000 crore. Neither the GHMC, HMDA nor the roads and buildings department has this kind of money, a senior official said.
The proposed 1.5-km flyover at Che Number Chowrasta would have at least two lanes on either side. It would cross the Che Number Chowrasta and the junction at Sri Ramana Talkies at Amberpet and touch down at Gandhi statue.
This and the proposed Uppal expressway are aimed at cutting travel time on the Hyderabad-Warangal highway as traffic jams at Amberpet and Uppal are common even during non-peak hours.
Mr I. Ganapathi Reddy, roads and buildings engineer-in-chief (national highways), said the Uppal-Narapally flyover had been planned to provide seamless travel up to Outer Ring Road near Ghatkesar.
“There is in-principle approval from the Union transport ministry for projects like Regional Ring Road and Che Number Chowrasta flyover. We will seek funds for the Uppal elevated corridor also,” he said.
