Modi raised triple talaq issue to polarise voters in UP: Asaduddin Owaisi

Talaq is the most disliked thing in Islam. People get separated. But, why is that Muslims are only made the target, asks Owaisi.

Hyderabad: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owisi on Tuesday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about the triple talaq issue as the BJP wanted to "polarise" votersahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

"It is really surprising, but I am not surprised. But thePrime Minister, instead of making governance, corruption, the Yadav Pariwar's infighting, the Prime Minister wants to make construction of Ram Mandir and triple talaq (as) the core issue(s) of the BJP's campaign in Uttar Pradesh," Owaisi told reporters.

Breaking his silence on the hugely contentious issue of triple talaq, Modi had yesterday denounced the practice among Muslims and deprecated attempts to politicise the issue while addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh.

The Hyderabad MP said Modi was talking about "polarising" issues, instead of focusing on constructive issues, to ensure that his party wins forthcoming polls.

"Talaq is the most disliked thing in Islam. People get separated. But, why is that Muslims are only made the target?" Owaisi said.

Why does not the NDA government take steps to give reservation to Muslims across the country if it is concerned about the welfare of Muslim women, he asked.

"Now the matter is in Supreme Court, it would have beenin the fitness of things, had the Prime Minister not spoken about it. It shows BJP and the Prime Minister are short of constructive ideas, that's why they are using the (issues) of Ram Mandir and Talaq to polarise voters for the forthcoming elections in UP, Goa and Punjab elections," he said.
