Vikravandi bypoll: DMK fields Pugazhendhi
Chennai: The DMK on Tuesday announced that it was fielding N. Pugazhendhi, 66, as the party candidate for the October 21 Assembly by-poll from Vikravandi constituency. The DMK has allotted the other seat in Nanguneri, to Congress.
Pugazhendhi’s candidature was announced by the DMK president MK Stalin after the party panel of seniors interviewed 12 aspirants for the DMK ticket to contest from Vikravandi in Villupuram district.
Pugazhendhi, an old face, is treasurer of the DMK’s central Villupuram district unit and has been a member of the party since 1970. A union secretary three times, Pugazhendhi has been active in local bodies including as panchayat president and panchayat union chairman, Koliyanur.
Briefing reporters, senior DMK leader and Villupuram district secretary Dr K. Ponmudi, said Pugazhendhi's candidature has been announced by Mr. Stalin with the support of all the allies of the DMK, including Congress, VCK and Left parties.
The DMK was hopeful of retaining the Vikravandi seat, said Dr Ponmudi, adding, Stalin and Udayanidhi Stalin will be campaigning for the by-polls.
