Police shortage in Coimbatore district

As many as 1,400 police are working in various police stations under the five sub-divisions.

COIMBATORE: In the backdrop of police stations in Coimbatore district facing a shortage of policemen and officers, as many as 350 existing policemen from Armed Reserve constabulary unit, have been apportioned for duty across the district.

According to a well informed source, there are 39 police stations including three All Women's police station and one traffic investigation wing that functions under five sub-divisions including Periyanaickenpalayam, Perur, Karumathampatti, Pollachi and Valparai under the jurisdiction of Coimbatore district police.

As many as 1,400 police are working in various police stations under the five sub-divisions. However, there is a shortage of about 700 policemen in the district. Recently 445 policemen joined the district armed reserve after completing their training and immediately the existing 350 policemen in that unit were split and transferred to 39 police stations by the district SP, Mr. Sujith Kumar to part-meet the requirements in them to help reduce the crime rate in Coimbatore district.

The villagers of Ayyampalayam that comes under the jurisdiction limit of Negamam police station had petitioned the SP urging to transfer their village limit under the newly opened Sulthanpet police station considering the 20-km distance norm.

This plea has been recommended by the superintendent of police to the department superiors, it is learnt.

It comes as a surprise that an industrially advanced district faces manpower shortage.
