Kochi: A 20-year-old medical student hailing from New Delhi allegedly jumped off the multi-storey medical college building of the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences near Edappally on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Viola Rastogi, a first year MBBS student at the medical college.

The incident happened around 1.30 pm soon after she visited the administrative office of the college on the third floor, according to police.

The victim reportedly had some academic issues and backlogs in the first year MBBS examination, the police said. “Though study–related issues are suspected to be the reason behind her taking the extreme step, we are yet to confirm that,” an officer said. “The relatives have been informed and they are on the way from Delhi.”

Chernalloor police has registered a case for unnatural death.

The body is kept at the mortuary of the hospital. The police said the body will be released after carrying out the inquest and post-mortem on Wednesday.
