Kochi: HC stays demolition of Palarivattom flyover till October 10

The government should not go ahead without ascertaining the real reasons for the cracks developed in the structure.

Kochi: The High Court on Tuesday stayed the demolition of the Palarivattom flyover till October 10 on a petition filed by the Association of Structural Engineers and Geotechnical Consultants.

The court asked the government to respond to the points it raised and allowed the government to go ahead with other measures and works connected with the demolition.

The Association stated that the structure need not be demolished and could be strengthened using appropriate technology and termed the report of E. Sreedharan, principal advisor to the DMRC, as erroneous and without following the standard operating procedures.

The government should not go ahead without ascertaining the real reasons for the cracks developed in the structure.

The court made it clear that it would not interfere in the ongoing vigilance investigation linked to the alleged corruption in its construction while considering the bail petitions of former PWD secretary T.O. Sooraj and three others.

The counsel for the vigilance opposed the bail plea and submitted that Sumeet Goyal, the managing director of RDS Projects that built it, was aware of the involvement of top political leaders and officials in the scandal.

It has also submitted that a fresh affidavit will be filed after questioning Mr Sooraj. The role of former PWD minister Ibrahim Kunju will also be ascertained from him.

Muvattupuzha Vigilance Court granted permission for the investigators to question Mr Sooraj again in jail from 10 am to 1 pm. The counsel for the vigilance opposed his bail plea in the high court and refuted his contentions.
