Chennai: World Rose Day cheers cancer patients

World Rose Day is observed on September 22 every year in the memory of 12-year-old Melinda Rose of Canada.

Chennai: Smiles galore lit up the 'Rose Day' celebration under the auspices of Cancer Alleviation Foundation (CALF) at the Paterson Cancer Center here. Cancer patients, survivors and their families shared happy anecdotes and of course roses and cheer-up cards on the occasion.

World Rose Day is observed on September 22 every year in the memory of 12-year-old Melinda Rose of Canada, who had put up a brave fight to not just handle the physical pain and mental trauma on being diagnosed with Askin's Tumour, a rare form of blood cancer, but also cheered up several cancer patients sending them poems, letters and e-mails doused in amazing positive spirit.

Patterson's Managing Director Dr S Vijayaraghavan spoke to the audience about the significance of Rose Day and encouraged the patients and families gathered, to face life bravely. "We believe strongly that it's the fear that kills, not the cancer; that's why we have designed this Rose Day as a happy link between the patients and those who have been treated and cured.

The latter share their experiences that counter the rhetoric and incorrect opinions gathered from non-oncology professionals that dip confidence and cause sleepless nights", said the cancer specialist.

He said Patterson Cancer Centre has so far screened more than 2000 people by conducting free medical camps.

Prof. V Kamakoti of IIT-Madras was the chief guest at the function. Other participants included former ADGP Kamaraja, SP Rajeswari of Idol Wing CB-CID, actor-playwright S Ve Shekar, Senior Advocate B Natarajan and 'Mirchi' Shiva, actor-DJ.
