Chennai: State Human Rights Commission seeks report on burial grounds

The Commission directed the Ariyalur District Collector and collector in all the districts to enquire into the matter.

Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission directed district collectors to file report in connection with total number of burial grounds available especially for SC/ST people in the districts. Following recent incident of people carrying dead body of an aged woman wading through water in a canal in Ariyalur, SHRC member Dr. A. Chittaranjan Mohandoss, a retired I.A.S officer, directed the collectors to file a detailed report in four weeks.

Based on a newspaper report, the Commission on Tuesday initiated suo motu proceeding. According to the news report, M Mariyammal, 70, of Vakkira Kaliyamman temple colony at Tha Palur village in Ariyalur district died following brief illness recently. Her body carried on a catafalque by the local residents to burial ground to conduct funeral by wading through water in a canal. The Commission directed the Ariyalur District Collector and collector in all the districts to enquire into the matter and send a consolidated report within four weeks regarding number of burial ground available especially for SC/ST people in every village of each district, whether sufficient land has been allotted to them or not?, and whether there are proper road facilities towards burial ground?
