Disrespect to Periyar statue in Orathanadu triggers stir

Jayakumar alleged that H. Raja, BJP national secretary was behind the incident and demanded his arrest.

THANJAVUR: Members of Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) staged ‘raastha roko’ agitations at two places in Thanajvur district protesting against the denigration of Periyar statue at Kavarapattu in Orathanadu taluk by miscreants who adorned the image with a ‘garland of footwear’ on Monday.

The ‘footwear garland’ was seen dangling from the hands of a Periyar statue near bus stand at Kavarapattu village on Monday morning. Following this, DK members blocked vehicular traffic on Orathanadu-Mannargudi road condemning the act and appealing to the police to arrest the miscreants.

The protesters were led by Jayakumar, state general secretary of DK. Later the members came to Orathanadu and staged a ‘raastha roko’ agitation near the Anna statue there.

Jayakumar alleged that H. Raja, BJP national secretary was behind the incident and demanded his arrest. The police intervened and held talks with agitators. After they assured that action will be taken against guilty, the DK members dispersed. Gunasekaran, state convener of DK and Senthur Pandian, student wing secretary of the party participated in the agitation.
