Uri gun battle: Fourth militant killed; operation still on

The Army said that the search operation was launched in Uri's Kalgai village after receiving information about the presence of militants.

Srinagar: The Army said on Monday that it has “neutralized” a fourth militant during ongoing search operation in Uri area close to Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s north-western Baramulla district.

“Fourth terrorist also killed. The body has been recovered but the search operation is still on,” defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said in a WhatsApp message to this newspaper.

Three militants were killed in a fire fight that broke out during the cordon-and-search operation in Uri earlier on Sunday. The Army had said that it foiled a terror attack on one of its bases in the Uri sector by killing three heavily armed men who are believed to had sneaked into the area after breaching the LoC earlier.

Corroborating it, Deputy Commander of the Uri Brigade, Harpeet Singh, told visiting reporters, “The terrorists who may have sneaked in just before the incident were trying to carry out a major attack at an Army camp.” He also said that the search operation was still underway and that it would be called off only “when we are sure there are no more terrorists around.” He said that AK-47 rifles with magazines and live ammunition and hand grenades have been found on the slain men.

The Army said that the search operation was launched in Uri’s Kalgai village after receiving information about the presence of militants. One soldier and four civilians were injured in the ensuing gunfight. Four residential houses suffered extensive damage in the fighting, reports from Uri said.
