Medak: Twenty three dam workers stranded at thier worksite

Although the makeshift huts were above the danger mark, they faced a risk as water was being released from the Singur project.

Medak: Twenty-three workers were marooned at their worksite by the raging waters of the Manjira on Saturday night. Their rescue was hampered by darkness.

The workers, hailing from Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, were working on a check dam at Tekula Gadda near the Idupulapaya temple in Papannapeta mandal of Medak district. They had set up temporary sheds near the site.
Floods in the Manjira river resulted in water flowing on either side of the worksite.

Although the makeshift huts were above the danger mark, they faced a risk as water was being released from the Singur project.

Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy and Collector Ronald Rose reached the spot to oversee the rescue operations. An NDRF team was rushed from Hyderabad, but they could not go to the site in boats due to the boulders near the site.

Two helicopters requisitioned by the state government were pressed into service but they returned due to bad weather.

Officials said the rescue operation will start on Sunday morning.
