KSPCB warns against waste oil diversion
Bengaluru: The Karnataka Oil Recyclers Association (KORA) said that about 25,000 barrels of waste oil is being generated in the state, but they are receiving only 10 per cent of it. The association stressed that vehicle service stations were the major defaulters and urged the KSPCB to oversee that all the waste oil was diverted to them.
Participating in a meeting with KORA on Saturday, KSPCB informed the association that waste oil generated from various sectors were hazardous and had to be managed as per the provisions of the Hazardous Waste and Other Waste (Management and Trans boundary Movement) Rules 2016. Out of the 34 oil re-processor units in the state, 27 attended the meeting.
KSPCB chairman Lakshman told the association members that henceforth waste oil should be transported from generating source to the reprocessing units through vehicles authorised by the Board and fitted with GPS.
He said that any generators or re-processors engaged in trading activity will be a violation of law. He said that the Board will carry out random checks on bulk generators like service stations and others and if any violation was found, action would be taken.
Directing the KORA to carry out third party auditing of all reprocessing units, Lakshman said a meeting of oil companies, bulk generators and regulatory government agencies would be held to streamline handling of waste without causing damage to environment.
