Rivalry leads to clash between two trans groups

Nathi, a transgender and a resident of Jagadgirigutta, alleged that she was beaten by members of another transgender group

Hyderabad: Rivalry between two transgender groups led to a clash on Tuesday, with both of them accusing each other of atrocities.

Nathi, a transgender and a resident of Jagadgirigutta, who earns a living by doing sex work and begging at ceremonies, alleged that she was beaten by members of another transgender group. She alleged at a press conference that she was attacked by one Monalisa on August 19, at around 2 am.

Nathi said, “I was working for Monalisa’s group earlier. She was exploiting me and she would take away all my earnings. I moved away from her and because of this, she wanted to take revenge.”

Devi Sree, a transgender who accompanied Nathi on Tuesday, said, “Monalisa wants her monopoly on Kukutpally, KPHP, Moosapet, Ameerpet and IDPL. Her henchmen, ask for goodwill amount. Monalisa who is from Tenali in Andhra Pradesh has a group more than 100 in her group.”

When contacted, Monalisa said, the allegations against her were baseless. “I believe in the law. I filed a counter report on them. They are being instigated by their group heads to defame me. This is an outcome of a 2015 case at Charminar police station where I was a witness against them.”

According to Kukatpally inspector T. Narsingh Rao, Nathi lodged a written complaint on the morning of the incident. He said, “There was a clash between two groups of transgenders. The police called both the groups and counselled them. Both parties lodged complaints against each other.”
