Order to book bishop for ‘quota admissions’

The bishop has been included as the third accused for cheating the candidates by promising them seats in the medical college.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Neyyatinkara police on Saturday registered a case against CSI south Kerala diocese bishop A. Dharmaraj Rassalam over the forgery of a docum-ent for MBSS admissions in Dr. Somervel CSI Medical College, Karakon-am. The Neyyattinkara first class judicial magistrate had ordered the registration of a case based on a complaint filed by V. T. Mohanan, a member of the Church. The complaint stated that a girl had got admission by submitting a forged document to the effect that she was a member of the CSI Anglican Church. Meanwhile, the admission sup-ervisory committee headed by Justice Rajendra Babu has recommended registering criminal cases against three, including the bishop.

The bishop has been included as the third accused for cheating the candidates by promising them seats in the medical college.

As per the complaints submitted by 24 people to the committee, the college authorities collected huge amounts from them, but did not provide admissions to their wards. Though the committee had directed the college to return the amounts and the bishop promised to monitor the payback, it was not done. Following this, the students approached the committee again.

It was also alleged that the payments were made after consulting the top college authorities.

Most of the complainants belong to Tamil Nadu and their wards were not eligible for admission to MBBS courses in Kerala as per the provisions in the KEAM prospectus.

The committee recommended to the government under section 8(4) of Act of 2017 to take appropriate steps against the college to refund the amount and initiate criminal proceedings against the concerned people.

As per the provisions in the prospectus, non-Keralite students were not eligible for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in the state. Yet the college authorities collected money promising them admission.
