Man wanted in Tiruchy heist held in Perambalur

Rs 16 lakh bank cash robbery case solved, thanks to an auto driver.

PERAMBALUR: Police arrested a 40-year-old man who was allegedly involved in robbing a cash bag containing Rs 16 lakh at the City Union Bank (CUB) branch premises at Tiruchy on Tuesday, thanks to the clue provided by an auto driver at Perambalur on Friday night.

It might be recalled that two employees of a private concern meant for filling up the currencies in the bank ATMs had withdrawn cash of Rs 32 lakh and kept the same in two bags.

As they were fulfilling routine formalities, the accused diverted the attention of the employees and decamped with one of the bags containing Rs 16 lakh cash.

Police gave the name of the accused as Stephan of Tiruchy. He tried to check into a lodge in Perambalur, but the lodge owner on suspicion did not accommodate Stephen and alerted the police meanwhile.

The auto-driver who drove him in Perambalur handed Stephen over to the local police station and on police inquiry it came to be known he was involved in the bank cash heist.

A sum of Rs 12.97 lakh was seized from Stephen and both were handed over to the crime branch police at Tiruchy fort.

The Perambalur police appreciated auto driver Murugaiah's presence of mind and quick action in taking the right course without any fear.
