Telangana: Bhagiratha is New Year gift

It's a matter of life and death, speed up work, KCR tells officers.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday said that Mission Bhagiratha was a matter of life and death for the TRS government and set a deadline of December 2017 to complete the project.

Mr Rao asked officials to supply water from Mission Bhagiratha to the people as a New Year gift from January 1, 2018. He was speaking during a review of progress of project with ministers and officials at Pragathi Bhavan.

The CM reminded officials of his vow that the TRS would not seek votes in the 2019 elections if it fails to complete the project by then.

He asked them to work day and night to achieve this goal and ensure that water from Mission Bhagiratha reaches the people by December.

Mr Rao said no government in the country could implement a project like Mission Bhagiratha by spending over '43,000 crore to provide safe drinking water through taps to every household in the state.

“I will visit the construction sites and monitor the progress of work to ensure the project is completed by December. I request all public representatives to monitor the work in their jurisdiction," Mr Rao said.

The power department has speeded up setting up sub-stations, transmission lines, transformers for the projects.

Mr Rao said contractors had expressed concern over increased burden on works due to higher GST on work contracts and the government will take up the issue with the Centre in the GST Council meeting to be held on September 9 in Hyderabad.

Mr Rao expressed confidence that the Centre would reduce GST to 5 per cent from existing 12 per cent on work contracts.
