Ram Nath Kovind, PM Modi, Mysuru's Ganesha fest has it all

The idols are not just relevant to present times in their themes but also in the material used to make them.

Mysuru: The Ganesha festival seems to give wing to artistic expression every year as craftsmen portray the Elephant God in various forms and situations depending on what takes their fancy from current affairs.

With demonetisation having made the greatest impact on people in recent months , 45- year- old CAVA artist, Revanna D from Kumabargeri in Mysuru city, has fashioned a Ganapathi idol from the new currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 this festival. He has Prime Minister Narendra Modi performing yoga with another Ganapathi statue and an idol of the Elephant God blessing the country’s soldiers.

One Ganapathi is seen holding the famous doll from the recent Sandalwood hit, Rajakumara in the company of the late screen idol, Dr Rajkumar and his son, Puneeth Rajkumar, sculpted with pigeons on their shoulders. The idols are not just relevant to present times in their themes but also in the material used to make them. Giving a go by to all harmful material, Mr Revanna has used environment- friendly clay and natural colours for his idols. While it took him six months of painstaking effort to make 500 Ganapathi idols for the festival, he is happy with the result.

With his parents being potters by profession, Mr Revanna took to the craft naturally, but later went on do his BFA in painting and sculpture from CAVA. "Inspired by the words of my high school teacher, K K Bandargal, I have been coming up with unique Ganapathi idol concepts for the past 15 years,” he says, revealing that his wife and children help him create the idols based on unique themes.
