Leaders welcome right to privacy ruling as fundamental right by SC

VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan hoped that the Supreme Court would follow its verdict with measures to safeguard the rights of citizens.

Chennai: Leaders including DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court verdict upholding right to privacy as a fundamental right.

“The monumental judgment, which upholds the right to privacy as a fundamental right is most welcome. It is an excellent interpretation of Article 21.It is against attack on privacy and a slap on the BJP government at the centre,” he wrote in a Facebook message.

PMK founder S. Ramadoss said Aadhaar card usage would help companies to know personal information about an individual and added that the centre should respect the basis of the judgment. Information about individuals had been released by private firms employed to collect such details, he charged. Calling the verdict as 'historic', he said the court had ensured individual rights granted in the Constitution.

Welcoming the judgment, CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan said the BJP's contention that right to privacy is not a fundamental right had been totally rejected by the Supreme Court. He said the verdict would safeguard individual values and dignity and asserted that Aadhar card usage would snatch away individual rights.

VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan hoped that the Supreme Court would follow its verdict with measures to safeguard the rights of citizens. Compelling citizens to give all the details for Aadhar card would snatch away fundamental rights and the verdict was a death blow to the BJP government, he said.
