Hyderabad: ICMR to develop vaccine

The ICMR said, Dengue, chikungunia and malaria are prevelent in India and combating them is a major concern.

Hyderabad: With dengue, chikungunia and malaria prevalent in India, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is looking to develop a vaccine to combat infectious diseases. The ICMR said, “Dengue, chikungunia and malaria are prevelent in India and combating them is a major concern.”

According to the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, there are about 10.90 lakh malaria cases and 1.29 lakh dengue cases reported in India every year. In the last seven years, there have been 64,000 chikungunya cases.

ICMR is planning to work with international and national companies to develop the vaccine. Pharmaceutical companies in Hyderabad said that the step by the government is in the right direction. They sought involvement of national pharma companies.
