NAAC revises new grading system for institutions
Hyderabad: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has revised the grading system used for rating higher education institutions.
NAAC Director Prof D.P. Singh said that the present system of descriptors for letter grades — i.e. very good, good, satisfactory, unsatisfactory — will be discontinued.
Under the new system which came into effect on July 1, 2016, all institutions for which visits have taken place from that date will be graded as per the revised grading system irrespective of the date of submission of Self Study Report (SSR).
Except for the letter grades, all other aspects of assessment and accreditation methodology such as criteria, key aspects, calculation of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and manuals remain the same, the director noted.
Institutions that have been accredited already will continue with the earlier grading system until the end of validity period. According to the new system, institutions getting CGPA score of 3.76 to 4 will be classified as A++, those with CGPA score between 3.51 to 3.75 will be A+ etc.
Likewise institutions that have scores of 1.51 to 2.0 will get accreditation with C grade and those below 1.5 CGPA score will not be accredited.
